While I was in Las Vegas for the No Excuses Summit, my wife & I took a tour of the Hoover Dam.  I was really impressed with it.  In fact, I did not even realize how important this one structure really was to the entire South West part of the United States.  Although it is so close to Las Vegas, only about 5% of the electric it produces go to Vegas.  In fact as of this writing the Vegas strip receives all of their power and water from a source other than the Hoover Dam.  A large majority of the power and water supplied by the dam goes to Southern California as well as Arizona.  The main reason the dam was built was for irrigation.   All the fruits & vegetables that come from the West Coast is because of the water supply from the Hoover Dam.
